How long does homemade garlic butter last?

  • Garlic Butter will last for up to a week in the fridge, wrapped tightly in baking paper, in an airtight container.
  • If you are needing to keep it longer, pop it into the freezer. Instructions to keep it fresh below:

Can this recipe be frozen?

Yes! Absolutely. If you are needing to keep it longer, store it wrapped tightly in baking paper, then in an airtight container or zip lock bag. Then place in the freezer, for up to 3 months. The garlic butter can be firmed up in the fridge first, in a log shape, then sliced and frozen for convenient pieces to use in cooking etc.

You could also freeze it in ice cube trays, for handy little portions. Then pop them out, and place them into an airtight container or zip lock bag and keep in the freezer for use, as needed.

TIP: If you’re having trouble popping out the frozen garlic butter from the ice cube trays, run a bit of warm water on the bottom side of the tray, they will pop straight out.

What sort of butter should I use?

It is really important to use decent quality butter, as it’s the main star of the show! The flavours will come through with a good premium quality one. It will be a little more expensive, but so worth it.

Also, you can either use salted or unsalted butter. It is easier to be able to add the amount of salt that you prefer. If you are using salted butter, you would skip the added salt in the recipe.

Can I use minced garlic?

You can use minced garlic in a jar, in place of fresh garlic cloves. If that’s all you have on hand, or if that’s what you prefer, go ahead and it will work. Although, if you do have fresh cloves on hand, you will appreciate, the delicious, strong, aroma and flavour that freshly minced garlic offers. Fresh garlic will always be stronger in flavour and aroma and taste better.

Can I use different herbs?

Yes! You can try any combinations you like. You could try parsley, oregano, thyme or rosemary. There are many other herbs to try.
