You can make the dumplings as big or as small as you like. This has made 11 dumplings here, but we’ve tried them bigger and smaller before and they were just as good with more golden syrup sauce over them. You can definitely double the sauce quantities for twice as much sauce, which is so good!

Hint: They’re also delicious the next day if covered and put in the fridge, but honestly, there’ll likely be none left they’re that good. Make a double batch! YUM!!

What is golden syrup?

Golden syrup is a combination of cane sugar, water and sometimes citric acid to help with shelf life. It has been heated to form a syrup consistency. It has a sweet, buttery flavour and is very popular in Australian cooking.

What can I replace golden syrup with?

  • Agave nectar
  • Honey
  • Corn syrup
  • Maple syrup

You’ll find that corn syrup will be the closest replacement in terms of taste. Honey will be a lot sweeter. All will be a little different, including the sauce, which may turn out a little runnier, depending on what ingredient you use.

This recipe has been a favourite for years, we grew up eating this as a sweet treat for dessert!

Can I freeze these?

No, it’s not recommended to freeze these, they may turn a little dry, and the sauce may separate. It is best to serve these fresh, immediately after baking them. Once cooled, they may be placed into the fridge to heat up and eat later, which is delicious mind you!

Can I reheat these dumplings?

Yes. These reheat beautifully. Put the amount of dumplings and sauce needed to be reheated, in a bowl or microwave friendly container. Then reheat in microwave for 1-2 minutes.

NOTE: Every microwave is different. Try reheating in 30 second bursts, until hot.

What can I serve golden syrup dumplings with?

  • Vanilla ice cream.
  • Custard- You can use store-bought or make your own, both are delicious.
  • Cream- You can serve these dumplings with light or full-fat cream here, depending on what you normally use. The cream helps cut some of the sweetness, for a nice balance in flavours.

  • 1 cup self-raising flour
