Apple puree in a white bowl with a white spoon on a wooden chopping board

Apple Puree

This is a very simple and delicious apple puree made with just cooked apples and then blended with a little water. It’s naturally sweet, healthy and very well-liked by babies and toddlers alike.

This is a great baby food that is gentle on the tummy and easily digested.

What is apple puree?

Simply chopped apples that have been steamed, then pureed with a little water added, until a smooth consistency. It’s then ready to eat as is, for babies, toddlers or adults.

It can be stirred through numerous foods or added as a topping to many things. Suggestions are down below.

What is the difference between apple puree and apple sauce?

  • Apple puree- You will find that the apple puree will always be well blended and have a smooth consistency, with no lumps.
  • Apple sauce- Can have a consistency anywhere from completely smooth, to quite chunky pieces of cooked apple.

Essentially they are the same, being made up of chopped, cooked apple, then blended to all different consistencies.

What type of apples should I use?

Honestly, you can use any type of apple that you like. Just use your favourite ones, as that will be how the end product tastes. Sweet ones are mainly used for this reason.

Suggestions:

  • Pink lady apples (what we use, and love)
  • Jazz apples
  • Royal gala
  • Golden Delicious
  • Fuji

Do I need to peel the apples?

The peel contains a lot of fibre and nutrients which is very good for you. However, if you are feeding this to your baby, you will want a really smooth consistency, so peeling the apples would make it easier for this.

As your baby gets older and the texture can change a little, plus more fibre can be added, then you can try with the skins on and see which texture you like. We prefer to peel the apples for a nice smooth texture.

How can I use this recipe?

  • This can be given to your baby, from 6 months old, or as per your pediatricians’ recommendations.
  • Mixed through baby rice cereal or Weet-Bix.
  • Stirred through any veggie or protein puree, for baby.
  • It’s delicious on top of cooked pork steaks.
  • Stirred through oatmeal or muesli, for breakfast for the family, adding extra fruit, fibre and sweetness.
  • Mixed through avocado, which has been mixed into a puree with a fork in a bowl.
  • Banana is made into a smooth puree with a fork and apple puree mixed through.

Do I need a Thermomix to make this recipe?

No, you can use a steamer basket over the top of a saucepan, filled with water, and cook until tender. Then add apples and water to a food processor or blender and blend until you have a smooth consistency.

My toddler hooked in as quick as I’d made this, and the baby enjoyed it just as much. I had to put some aside for the freezer, for ready-to-go food.

This gets made all the time in our house! It’s toddler and baby-friendly. Another favourite that we love and make all the time is banana ice cream, which is healthy and yummy!

How long will this last, and how do I store it?

  • It is best to keep a portion aside that you will use within 24 hours, by placing it in an airtight container or bowl covered with glad wrap and putting it in the fridge.
  • It’s best to freeze the remaining puree, either in small containers or in convenient ice cube trays for great portion sizes for up to 4 months.

How many apples do I need?

We have used four apples in this recipe, which makes one cup in total, but you could definitely use as many as you like.

You can fill up the steamer basket in the Thermomix, until just below the top and cook.

If you are using a steamer basket and saucepan to steam apples, you can use the quantity you like. Then use a food processor or blender with the water to blend until smooth.

Can I freeze this recipe?

Yes, you can easily freeze apple puree into small, convenient portions. Make sure to sterilize all utensils and ice cube trays etc with boiling hot water or put them through the dishwasher, then place spoonfuls of puree to fill to the top of the tray.

Cover with lid provided or cover with glad wrap and place in the freezer overnight. Once frozen, push all the cubes out into an airtight container or zip lock bag, write the date cooked, and freeze up to 4 months.

TIPS:

  • If you’re having trouble getting the frozen cubes out of the ice cube tray, turn them upside down and run a bit of warm water over the bottom of the tray, and then they will pop straight out!
  • If you are using a zip lock bag, find a glass/cup of similar width to the bag you’re using, place the bag inside the cup, and turn over just the top of it over the glass. Push the cubes into the bag, then turn the top back in the right way, remove any air, and then seal and freeze. You’re welcome! 🙂

How do I thaw frozen puree?

Place the quantity needed into an airtight container or bowl, cover with glad wrap and place in the refrigerator to thaw slowly. It can be reheated on the stovetop or microwave if desired.

Be sure to mix together to distribute heat and check the temperature before serving. You may also need a little cooled, boiled water added and mixed through if it is a little thick.
